Organization & Service
The 18th Ohio Infantry (Three Years’ Service) was organized at Athens, Ohio, from August 16 to September 28, 1861. The regiment, numbering approximately 930 men at organization, moved into Kentucky and participated in the occupation of Bowling Green. It subsequently took part in the occupation of Huntsville, Alabama. At Bridgeport, Alabama, the regiment was attacked by Confederate cavalry under Scott but successfully held its position for three hours. The regiment also engaged in a fight at Limestone Bridge, suffering three killed and several wounded.
On August 29, 1862, Companies A and I of the 18th Ohio, along with Company D of the 9th Michigan, defended a stockade near Manchester, Tennessee, against an attack by Confederate forces under Forrest, repulsing the enemy without Federal loss. The regiment played a notable role at the Battle of Stone’s River, including a charge that checked a Confederate advance and the capture of four pieces of artillery following a successful assault. In June 1863, the regiment participated in the advance on Tullahoma and, on September 11, confronted Bragg’s army at Dug Gap. The 18th Ohio fought at the Battle of Chickamauga, making several charges during the engagement.
After the expiration of its original term, the regiment was mustered out on November 9, 1864. Veterans and recruits were consolidated with those of the 35th Ohio Infantry to form the 18th Veteran Ohio Infantry. The reorganized unit participated in the Battle of Nashville, suffering significant casualties, and subsequently pursued Hood’s forces to Huntsville, Alabama, and assisted in the capture of Decatur. The regiment remained on duty in Augusta, Georgia, until October 9, 1865, when it was ordered to muster out and returned to Columbus, Ohio, for final discharge on October 22, 1865.
