Whether you�re searching for an ancestor, researching a regiment, or studying a particular battle, this site is designed to help you find information quickly and easily.
We are currently updating and expanding the site to make it easier than ever to locate regiments, rosters, battles, and primary sources, while keeping the simple, research-focused layout that long-time visitors are familiar with.

You can browse units by state, branch, and side, including Union infantry, cavalry, and artillery, as well as Confederate infantry, cavalry, and artillery.
Battles & Campaigns
Explore key battles and campaigns of the Civil War through our growing collection of battle pages. Each entry is being expanded to include:
- Dates and locations
- Commanders and orders of battle
- Units engaged on each side
- Casualty information where available
- Links to Official Records reports and other primary sources
As we continue updating the site, more battles will be added and cross-linked to the regiments that participated in them, making it easier to follow a unit through the course of the war.
Official Records & Primary Sources
CivilWarIndex.com connects you to the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion and other primary documents. Where available, battle and regiment pages include:
- Volume and page references from the Official Records
- Links to digitized volumes on the Internet Archive and other collections
- Notes on key reports and correspondence related to each engagement or unit
These references make it easier to move from a brief summary on this site to the original reports and documents used by historians and researchers.
