Overview
The 214th Pennsylvania Infantry (One Year Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Pennsylvania for service in the Union Army during the final months of the American Civil War. The regiment was raised primarily in Philadelphia, with additional recruits from Lancaster and Northampton counties. Mustered into U.S. service at Philadelphia in March 1865, the 214th Pennsylvania served in the Eastern Theater and was attached to Union forces in the Shenandoah Valley and later in the defenses of Washington, D.C.
This regiment served during the closing phase of the war and continued its duties into the early Reconstruction period.
Organization & Service
The 214th Pennsylvania Infantry was organized at Philadelphia and mustered into service in March 1865 for a term of one year. Colonel David B. McKibbin commanded the regiment, with Lieutenant Colonel William H. Harrison and Major Charles H. Addicks as principal field officers. After organization, the regiment was sent to join General Egan’s command in the Shenandoah Valley, where it performed garrison and security duties.
In July 1865, following the end of major hostilities, the regiment was transferred to the defenses of Washington, D.C. A detachment of the 214th Pennsylvania spent the winter of 1865–1866 on guard duty at Annapolis, Maryland. The regiment remained on post and guard duty until it was mustered out of service at Philadelphia on March 21, 1866.
