197th Pennsylvania Infantry in the American Civil War

Overview

The 197th Pennsylvania Infantry (One Hundred Days’ Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Pennsylvania during the summer of 1864 for Union service in the American Civil War. Known as the 3rd Coal Exchange Regiment, it was mustered in at Camp Cadwalader, Philadelphia, between July 14 and July 22, 1864. The regiment served the Union in the Eastern theater and was primarily tasked with guard duty during its brief period of service.

This regiment was composed of officers and men with prior military experience, reflecting the urgency and demands of the 100 days’ enlistment period in 1864.

Organization & Service

The 197th Pennsylvania Infantry was organized at Camp Cadwalader, Philadelphia, and mustered into United States service for a term of 100 days between July 14 and July 22, 1864. Colonel John R. Haslett commanded the regiment, with Lieutenant Colonel Charles D. Kenworthy and Major John Woodcock as principal field officers. Many of the officers and men had previously served in other units.

Shortly after organization, the regiment moved to Camp Bradford, Baltimore, Maryland. After a brief period, it was ordered to Rock Island, Illinois, where it was assigned to guard duty over Confederate prisoners of war. The regiment remained at Rock Island for the duration of its service, performing duties related to the security and management of the prison camp. The 197th Pennsylvania Infantry was mustered out of service at Philadelphia on November 11, 1864.
