177th Pennsylvania Infantry in the American Civil War

Overview

The 177th Pennsylvania Infantry (Nine Months’ Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Pennsylvania for Union service during the American Civil War. The regiment was mustered in at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, in November 1862 for a nine-month term. It drew its ranks from Lycoming, Susquehanna, Dauphin, Luzerne, Perry, and Indiana counties. The 177th Pennsylvania served primarily in the Department of Virginia and the Army of the Potomac, participating in defensive operations and expeditions in Virginia and Maryland.

Organization & Service

The 177th Pennsylvania Infantry (Nine Months’ Service) was organized at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, and mustered into United States service in November 1862. Shortly after organization, the regiment moved to Washington, D.C., on December 3, 1862. It was then ordered to Suffolk, Virginia, where it was assigned to a brigade commanded by Colonel Gibbs.

During the winter of 1862–1863, the regiment was stationed on the Nansemond River, engaged in clearing a pine forest across the river and participating in several expeditions into the surrounding countryside. In March 1863, the regiment was sent to Deep Creek along the Albemarle & Chesapeake Canal, where its primary duty was to disrupt contraband trade in the region. On July 10, 1863, the regiment was transferred to Washington, D.C., and subsequently attached to the Army of the Potomac in Maryland. After a period of duty at Maryland Heights, the regiment returned to Pennsylvania and was mustered out at Harrisburg on August 7, 1863.
