Overview

The 195th Ohio Infantry (One Year Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Ohio for service in the Union Army during the final months of the American Civil War. The regiment was mustered in at Camp Chase, Ohio, between March 14 and March 20, 1865. It served in the Eastern Theater, primarily performing garrison, provost, and guard duties during its term of service.

This regiment was part of the Union forces during the closing phase of the war and did not participate in major combat operations, as the Confederate surrender occurred shortly after its organization.

Organization & Service

The 195th Ohio Infantry (One Year Service) was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, from March 14 to March 20, 1865, under the command of Colonel Henry B. Banning. After organization, the regiment proceeded to Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia, arriving on March 25, 1865. The unit performed garrison duty at Harper’s Ferry for several days before moving to a camp near Winchester, Virginia, where it was attached to the command of General Winfield S. Hancock.

While stationed near Winchester, the regiment received news of General Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House. Following this, the 195th Ohio Infantry was ordered to Alexandria, Virginia. There, it was assigned to provost and guard duty, maintaining order and security in the area. The regiment continued these duties until December 18, 1865, when it was mustered out of service in accordance with orders from the War Department.
