Overview
The 193rd Ohio Infantry (One Year Service) was an infantry regiment from Ohio that served in the Union Army during the final months of the American Civil War. Organized at Camp Chase in March 1865, the regiment was mustered in for one year’s service. It was primarily active in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, during the closing operations of the war.
This regiment was among the last Ohio infantry units formed, and its service coincided with the surrender of the principal Confederate armies. The 193rd Ohio Infantry did not participate in major battles but contributed to occupation and stabilization duties in the Shenandoah Valley.
Organization & Service
The 193rd Ohio Infantry was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, in March 1865. Upon completion of its organization, the regiment was ordered to the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. It moved from Harper’s Ferry to Halltown and then to Charlestown, where it was partially organized with other regiments into brigades and divisions.
From Charlestown, the regiment marched up the Shenandoah Valley to Winchester, Virginia. The 193rd remained stationed at Winchester through the end of the war and the surrender of Confederate forces. The regiment was mustered out of service on August 4, 1865, in accordance with orders from the War Department.
