Overview
The 165th Ohio Infantry (One Hundred and Sixty-fifth Battalion Infantry) was a Union infantry battalion organized for 100 days’ service during the American Civil War. Raised in Ohio and composed primarily of men from the 10th Regiment Ohio National Guard in Cincinnati, the battalion was mustered at Camp Dennison in May 1864. It served in the Western Theater, primarily performing guard and garrison duties.
Organization & Service
The 165th Ohio Infantry (100 Days’ Service) was organized at Camp Dennison, Ohio, on May 14 and 19, 1864. The battalion consisted of seven companies, drawn from the 10th Regiment Ohio National Guard. Upon organization, the unit was placed under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Bohlender and Major Matthew Reiching.
After initial duty at Camp Dennison, the battalion was transferred on May 20, 1864, to Johnson’s Island, where it was assigned to guard Confederate prisoners of war. On June 25, the battalion received orders to move to Kentucky, where it remained on duty until August 8. Subsequently, it was ordered to Cumberland, Maryland, and performed further garrison and guard duties in Maryland and Virginia until August 27. The battalion returned to Camp Dennison and was mustered out of service on August 31, 1864.
