155th Ohio Infantry ​in the American Civil War

Overview

The 155th Ohio Infantry (One Hundred Days’ Service) was an infantry regiment from Ohio that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Organized at Camp Dennison in May 1864, the regiment was composed primarily of men from the 92nd Battalion, Ohio National Guard (Pickaway County), and the 44th Battalion, Ohio National Guard (Mahoning County). The unit was mustered in for a service term of 100 days and was primarily assigned to garrison and escort duties in the Eastern Theater.

Organization & Service

The 155th Ohio Infantry (One Hundred Days’ Service) was organized at Camp Dennison, Ohio, and mustered into federal service on May 8, 1864. Colonel Harley H. Sage commanded the regiment, with Lieutenant Colonel Roswell Shurtleff and Major Peter Lutz as principal field officers. Upon organization, the regiment was ordered to New Creek, West Virginia, and soon after to Martinsburg, where it performed garrison and escort duty until June 3, 1864.

On June 3, the regiment was ordered to Washington, D.C., and subsequently moved to White House, Virginia. From there, it proceeded to Bermuda Hundred and City Point, remaining on duty until June 29. The regiment was then ordered to Norfolk, Virginia, where it was stationed in an entrenched camp. On July 26, a detachment of 500 men from the regiment participated in an expedition to Elizabeth City, North Carolina, returning to Norfolk afterward. The regiment remained in Norfolk until August 19, when it was ordered back to Ohio. It arrived at Camp Dennison on August 24 and was mustered out of service on August 27, 1864.
