131st Ohio Infantry ​in the American Civil War

Overview

The 131st Ohio Infantry (One Hundred and Thirty-first Ohio Volunteer Infantry) was an infantry regiment organized for 100 days’ service during the American Civil War. Raised in Ohio and mustered into Union service in May 1864, the regiment was composed primarily of men from Montgomery County, drawn from the 2nd and 12th Ohio National Guard regiments. The unit served in the Eastern Theater, primarily on garrison duty in Maryland.

Organization & Service

The 131st Ohio Infantry (100 Days’ Service) was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, and mustered in on May 14, 1864. The regiment consisted mainly of men from the 2nd and 12th Ohio National Guard, with the exception of Captain Beard’s company of the 12th, which was assigned to the 132nd Ohio Infantry. Upon organization, the regiment was ordered to Baltimore, Maryland, where it arrived shortly after mustering in.

In Baltimore, the 131st Ohio Infantry was assigned to garrison duty at Fort McHenry, Fort Marshall, and Federal Hill. The regiment remained stationed at these posts throughout its term of service, performing guard and defensive duties. On August 19, 1864, the regiment departed Baltimore for Ohio, arriving at Columbus on August 21. The men were mustered out of service on August 25, 1864, upon the expiration of their 100-day term.
