Overview
The 106th Ohio Infantry (Three Years’ Service) was an infantry regiment organized at Camp Dennison, Ohio, for service in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment, except for Companies I and K, was mustered in between August 26 and October 25, 1862, for a three-year term. Companies I and K were organized later, in September and October 1864, for one year’s service. The 106th Ohio served primarily in the Western Theater, with notable duties in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama.
Organization & Service
The 106th Ohio Infantry (Three Years’ Service) began organizing at Camp Dennison, Ohio, in late August 1862. Most companies were mustered in by October 25, 1862, with Companies I and K joining in the fall of 1864. The regiment was ordered to Covington, Kentucky, on September 4, 1862, to help defend against Confederate forces threatening Cincinnati. Shortly after, the regiment participated in expeditions against Confederate cavalry under Gen. John Morgan.
By late November 1862, the 106th Ohio had moved to Hartsville, Tennessee. On December 7, 1862, the regiment was engaged in the Battle of Hartsville, suffering significant losses in killed, wounded, and missing. Following this action, the regiment was assigned to guard railroad lines and conduct operations against guerrilla forces and bushwhackers throughout Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. The 106th Ohio continued these duties, participating in various expeditions and maintaining security in contested regions until the end of the war. The regiment was mustered out of service on June 29, 1865, in accordance with orders from the War Department.
