Overview
The 64th Ohio Infantry (Three Years’ Service) was an infantry regiment from Ohio that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Organized at Camp Buckingham in Mansfield, Ohio, the regiment was mustered in between November 6 and December 14, 1861, for a three-year term of service. The 64th Ohio participated in major campaigns in the Western Theater and was noted for its involvement in several significant battles.
The regiment remained active until December 3, 1865, with original members (except veterans) mustered out at various dates from December 10, 1864, to May 31, 1865, as their terms expired. Veterans and recruits continued service until the final muster out. The 64th Ohio Infantry was recognized for its steadfast service and notable losses in several engagements.
Organization & Service
The 64th Ohio Infantry (Three Years’ Service) was organized at Camp Buckingham, Mansfield, Ohio, from November 6 to December 14, 1861. Upon completion of organization, the regiment was mustered into Federal service and assigned to the Army of the Ohio, later serving under the Army of the Cumberland and other commands as the war progressed.
The regiment’s early service included participation in the Battle of Shiloh, where Company A was the only company to engage in action. The 64th Ohio was involved in the siege of Corinth, Mississippi, and subsequently took part in the Battle of Stone’s River, suffering significant casualties. The regiment continued to serve in major campaigns, including Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and the Atlanta Campaign, fighting at Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, Dallas, Kennesaw Mountain, Peachtree Creek, and during the siege of Atlanta. It also participated in the battles of Jonesboro, Lovejoy’s Station, Spring Hill, Franklin, and Nashville.
As the original members’ terms expired, they were mustered out between December 1864 and May 1865. The regiment, composed of veterans and recruits, remained in service until December 3, 1865, when it was mustered out in accordance with War Department orders.

Casualties
At the Battle of Stone’s River, the 64th Ohio Infantry lost 75 men killed and wounded out of about 300 engaged. During the Battle of Chickamauga, the regiment suffered over 100 men killed, wounded, and missing. At Rocky Face Ridge, 21 were killed and 65 wounded. The regiment also lost several men killed and wounded at Resaca. Complete aggregate casualty figures for the entire service term are not specified in available primary sources.
