The 52nd Ohio Infantry (Three Years’ Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Ohio for service in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Mustered at Camp Dennison in August 1862, the regiment served primarily in the Western Theater. The 52nd Ohio participated in major campaigns, including Chickamauga, the Atlanta Campaign, and Sherman’s March to the Sea. The unit was known for its discipline and endurance throughout its service.
Organization & Service
The 52nd Ohio Infantry (Three Years’ Service) was organized at Camp Dennison, Ohio, in August 1862, under the command of Colonel Daniel McCook. The regiment departed Camp Dennison for Lexington, Kentucky, on August 25, 1862, passing through Cincinnati. During the fall and winter of 1862 and the summer of 1863, the regiment was engaged in marches and detail work across Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama.
The regiment’s first major combat was at the Battle of Chickamauga, where it played a prominent role and was among the last regiments to leave the field. Following Chickamauga, the 52nd Ohio continued with various assignments, including guard and garrison duty, until the start of the Atlanta Campaign in 1864. During this campaign, the regiment was engaged at Resaca, where it made a successful but costly charge, and at Kennesaw Mountain, participating in the intense fighting. The 52nd Ohio remained active through the operations leading to the capture of Atlanta.
After the fall of Atlanta, the regiment joined Sherman’s March to the Sea, advancing to Savannah, Georgia, and then through the Carolinas during the final campaigns of the war. The regiment participated in the Grand Review in Washington, D.C., before being mustered out of service on June 3, 1865.
