Overview
The 25th Ohio Independent Battery Light Artillery served as a Union artillery unit during the American Civil War. Organized from enlisted men of the 2nd Ohio Cavalry at Crane Creek, Missouri, on February 17, 1863, the battery was mustered in for three years’ service. It operated primarily in the Western Theater, with notable service in Missouri and Arkansas. The battery was known for its active participation in expeditions and engagements throughout these states.
Organization & Service
The 25th Ohio Independent Battery Light Artillery was formed at Crane Creek, Missouri, on February 17, 1863, from members of the 2nd Ohio Cavalry. Captain Julius L. Hadley was its initial commanding officer. The battery was attached to various commands operating in Missouri and Arkansas during its service.
Throughout the summer of 1863, the battery participated in several expeditions in Missouri and Arkansas, including the battle of Brownsville, Arkansas. It was frequently engaged in skirmishes and operations until September 1863, when it entered Little Rock. The unit remained stationed at Little Rock during September and October, and continued to operate against Confederate forces in southern Arkansas. For the remainder of 1863, the battery performed garrison and field duties at various locations in Arkansas.
After reorganization as a veteran battery, the 25th Ohio continued its service at Little Rock, Arkansas, where it remained on duty until the close of the war. The battery was ordered to Camp Chase, Ohio, and was mustered out on December 12, 1865, in accordance with orders from the War Department.
