Overview
The 17th Ohio Infantry (Three Months’ Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Ohio for Union service at the outset of the American Civil War. The regiment was composed of companies enrolled at various locations across Ohio in April 1861 and was mustered into state service at Camp Anderson, Lancaster. It subsequently entered United States service under the second call for 300,000 men. The regiment primarily served in western Virginia, performing guard and expeditionary duties.

Organization & Service
The companies of the 17th Ohio Infantry (Three Months’ Service) were enrolled as follows: Company A on April 27 and Company F on April 22 at Lancaster; Company B on April 26 at Granville; Company C on April 19 at London; Company D on April 25 at Logan; Company E on April 27 at New Lexington; Company G on April 16 at Pleasant Valley; Company H on April 27 at McConnelsville; Company I on April 27 at Fort Recovery; and Company K on April 22 at St. Clairsville. Upon assembly, the companies reported to Camp Anderson in Lancaster, where the regiment was formally organized and underwent drilling and equipping for field service.
The regiment was mustered into the service of the State of Ohio on June 5, 1861, for a term of three months. Shortly thereafter, it was transferred to United States service under the President’s second call for volunteers. Upon entering Virginia, the regiment was divided for operational purposes, performing duties such as guarding provision trains, conducting river expeditions, and operating against guerrilla forces. The regiment was ordered home on August 3, 1861, having served beyond its original term, and arrived at Zanesville on August 13. It was mustered out at Camp Goddard on August 15, 1861.
