The regiment was mustered into United States service at Camp Jackson, Columbus, Ohio, between April 24 and May 4, 1861, for a term of three months. It served on the Union side, primarily in the Western Theater, during the early mobilization period following the outbreak of hostilities.

Organization & Service

The companies of the 13th Ohio Infantry (Three Months’ Service) were enrolled between April 20 and April 27, 1861, in response to President Lincoln’s initial call for volunteers. The regiment was officially mustered into Federal service at Camp Jackson, Columbus, Ohio, from April 24 to May 4, 1861. Colonel A. Saunders Piatt commanded the regiment, with Lieutenant Colonel Columbus B. Mason and Major Joseph S. Hawkins as principal field officers.

During its three months of service, the regiment was primarily engaged in garrison and guard duties within Ohio and along the border regions, as the state organized its defenses and prepared for further mobilization. The regiment did not participate in major field campaigns or battles during this term. In June 1861, the regiment began reorganizing for three years’ service. Those members who did not reenlist for the longer term were mustered out with their companies at Columbus, Ohio, between August 14 and August 25, 1861.
