Overview
The 11th Ohio Infantry (Three Months’ Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Ohio for the Union Army at the outset of the Civil War. The regiment was composed of men from Miami, Clinton, Hamilton, Montgomery, and Columbiana counties, responding to President Lincoln’s initial call for volunteers. It was mustered into United States service on April 26, 1861, for a term of three months. The regiment served in the Western Theater and is notable for its brief period of service at the war’s beginning.
This unit is distinct from the 11th Ohio Infantry (Three Years’ Service).
Organization & Service
The 11th Ohio Infantry (Three Months’ Service) was enrolled between April 15 and April 25, 1861, and officially mustered into service on April 26, 1861, at Camp Dennison, Ohio. Colonel James F. Harrison commanded the regiment, with Lieutenant Colonel Joseph W. Frizell and Major Augustus H. Coleman as principal officers. The regiment was organized in response to the president’s call for 75,000 volunteers following the outbreak of hostilities at Fort Sumter.
The regiment was primarily assigned to duty within Ohio and along the border regions, performing guard and garrison duties. When the call for three years’ volunteers was issued, only a small portion of the regiment reenlisted for extended service; Companies I and K did not provide any men for the three years’ organization, choosing instead to complete their original term. Those who did reenlist for three years were enrolled between June 16 and June 23, 1861. The original three months’ companies were mustered out upon the expiration of their term, from August 1 to August 28, 1861.
