Overview
The 167th New York Infantry (Infantry) was an incomplete regiment organized in New York during the Civil War for Union service. The unit was intended to serve as an infantry regiment for the Union Army, but it did not complete its organization and was never mustered into full regimental service.
Instead, the enlisted men who had joined the 167th New York Infantry were transferred to another regiment before the 167th saw any field service. This regiment is distinct from other New York infantry regiments that completed their organization and served in the field.
Organization & Service
The 167th New York Infantry began organizing in New York in 1862. However, the regiment failed to complete its organization and was not mustered into service as a full regiment. On October 28, 1862, the enlisted men who had been recruited for the 167th were transferred to the 159th New York Infantry. These men formed Companies A, C, D, E, G, and I of the 159th New York Infantry. The 167th New York Infantry ceased to exist as a separate unit after this transfer.
No record exists of the 167th New York Infantry serving independently in any brigade, division, or army, nor did it participate in any campaigns or battles as a distinct regiment.
