Overview
The 130th New York Infantry (Three Years’ Service) was an infantry regiment raised in New York State for Union service during the American Civil War. Organized at Portage, New York, in August and September 1862, the regiment served as part of the Union Army in the Eastern Theater. Notably, the regiment was later converted to a mounted unit and redesignated as the 1st New York Dragoons in July 1863.
This unit is distinct from the 1st New York Infantry (Three Months’ Service) and other New York infantry regiments.
Organization & Service
The 130th New York Infantry was organized at Portage, New York, and mustered into United States service in August and September 1862 for a term of three years. Upon organization, the regiment was assigned to the Army of the Potomac and attached to various brigades and divisions within the Middle Department and later the Army of the Potomac’s 1st Division, 1st Corps.
The regiment participated in the defense of Suffolk, Virginia, and was engaged in operations in the Department of Virginia. In July 1863, the regiment was transferred to the mounted service and redesignated as the 1st New York Dragoons. Its subsequent service is recorded under that designation.

Casualties
Some details are incomplete in surviving primary sources. The regiment’s full casualty figures as infantry prior to conversion are not separately reported in Dyer’s Compendium or the State Adjutant General’s records. Losses after July 1863 are recorded under the 1st New York Dragoons.
