53rd New York Infantry in the American Civil War

Overview

The 53rd New York Infantry (Three Years’ Service), known as the “D’Epineuil Zouaves,” was an infantry regiment organized in New York City for Union service during the American Civil War. The regiment was composed mainly of men of French origin from across New York State, and included one company of Tuscarora Indians. It was mustered into United States service between August 27 and November 15, 1861, for a three-year term. The regiment served in the Eastern Theater and was noted for its distinctive Zouave uniforms and diverse composition.

Organization & Service

The 53rd New York Infantry (Three Years’ Service) was organized in New York City under the command of Colonel Lionel J. D’Epineuil. The companies were mustered into service from August 27 to November 15, 1861. After organization, the regiment departed for Washington, D.C., on November 18, 1861, and was stationed at Annapolis, Maryland.

In January 1862, the regiment was attached to Burnside’s Expeditionary Corps. A detachment of the 53rd New York participated in the battle of Roanoke Island in February 1862. In March 1862, the regiment was discontinued as an independent unit. Company A was transferred and became Company G of the 17th New York Infantry, while the remainder of the regiment was mustered out at Washington, D.C., on March 21, 1862.

Subsequently, authority was given to organize another regiment under the 53rd New York designation, with Major A. Buckingham placed in command. However, in September 1862, the recruits for this new organization were transferred to the 132nd and 162nd New York Infantry regiments.
