Overview
The 36th New York Independent Battery was an artillery unit recruited in New York during the Civil War. Recruiting for this battery began in August 1863. The battery was intended to serve as an independent artillery command for the Union Army. However, before it was fully organized or mustered into independent service, the men enlisted for the 36th Battery were reassigned to the 13th New York Artillery.
This unit served the Union and was associated with the Eastern Theater. The 36th Independent Battery did not see service as a distinct unit in the field.
Organization & Service
Recruitment for the 36th New York Independent Battery commenced in August 1863. The battery was never fully organized as a separate command. On October 14, 1863, the men who had enlisted for the 36th Battery were transferred and assigned to the 13th New York Artillery. As a result, the 36th Battery did not muster into service as an independent battery, and its personnel served under the 13th New York Artillery designation.
There is no record of the 36th Battery being attached to any brigade, division, corps, or army as a distinct unit, nor did it participate in campaigns or battles under its own designation.
