Overview
The 12th New York Artillery (Heavy) was a regiment authorized for service in the Union Army during the American Civil War. This unit was intended to serve as a heavy artillery regiment from New York State. Recruitment was authorized in the spring of 1863, with the regiment to be organized under Colonel Robert P. Gibson. The regiment was never fully organized, and its enlisted men were ultimately transferred to another New York artillery regiment.
This unit was part of the Union Army and was intended for service in the Eastern Theater. However, it did not see independent field service as a distinct regiment.
Organization & Service
On March 31, 1863, Colonel Robert P. Gibson received authority to recruit the 12th New York Artillery (Heavy). Recruitment efforts began, but the regiment was not completed. On June 22, 1863, the authority to organize the regiment was revoked. The men who had enlisted up to that point were transferred to the 15th New York Artillery (Heavy). The 12th New York Artillery (Heavy) was never mustered into service as a separate regiment and did not participate in any campaigns or battles under its own designation.
