154th Indiana Infantry in the American Civil War

Overview

The 154th Indiana Infantry (One Year’s Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Indiana for Union service during the final months of the American Civil War. Mustered in at Indianapolis on April 20, 1865, the regiment was part of a group of one-year regiments raised in response to a late-war call for additional troops. The unit served primarily in the Shenandoah Valley, performing guard duty in the immediate postwar period.

Organization & Service

The 154th Indiana Infantry (One Year’s Service) was recruited from the 8th Congressional District of Indiana. Organization and mustering took place at Indianapolis, with the regiment officially entering service on April 20, 1865. Colonel Frank Wilcox commanded the regiment, with Lieutenant Colonel John P. Gapen and Major John D. Simpson as principal field officers.

After mustering, the regiment departed Indiana on April 28, 1865, moving first to Parkersburg, West Virginia. The unit remained there until May 2, then proceeded into the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, where it was stationed at Stephenson’s Depot. The 154th Indiana Infantry performed guard duty at this location until June 27, 1865, after which it moved to Opequan Creek. The regiment continued its service in this area until it was mustered out on August 4, 1865. The regiment’s original strength was 977 men, with a small gain of 5 recruits during its service.
