152nd Indiana Infantry in the American Civil War

Overview

The 152nd Indiana Infantry (One Year’s Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Indiana for Union service during the final months of the American Civil War. The regiment was mustered in at Indianapolis on March 16, 1865, in response to a late-war call for one-year regiments. It served in the Eastern Theater, primarily in West Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley, and was part of the Union Army’s efforts to maintain order and security in the region during the closing months of the conflict.

This regiment was recruited from Indiana’s 9th, 10th, and 11th Congressional districts. Its service was characterized by garrison and provost duties rather than major combat operations, reflecting the late date of its organization.

Organization & Service

The 152nd Indiana Infantry (One Year’s Service) was organized at Indianapolis, Indiana, and mustered into Federal service on March 16, 1865. The regiment was formed in response to a call issued on December 20, 1864, for additional one-year regiments to reinforce Union forces as the war drew to a close. Recruitment was conducted at the headquarters of each provost marshal, with recruits forwarded to Indianapolis for organization.

On March 18, 1865, the regiment departed Indiana for Harper’s Ferry, Virginia. Upon arrival, it was assigned to duty with one of the provisional divisions of the Army of the Shenandoah. The 152nd Indiana was subsequently stationed at various points in the Shenandoah Valley, including Charlestown, Stephenson’s Depot, and Summit Point. Later in its service, the regiment moved to Clarksburg, West Virginia, where it performed garrison and security duties. The regiment remained in Clarksburg until it was mustered out of service on August 30, 1865.
