Overview
The 150th Indiana Infantry (One Year’s Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Indiana for Federal service during the final months of the American Civil War. The regiment was mustered in at Indianapolis on March 9, 1865, and served in the Union Army. Its service was primarily in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia, performing garrison and guard duties during the closing phase of the conflict.
This regiment was raised in response to a call for one-year regiments issued in December 1864. The 150th Indiana Infantry drew its men largely from Indiana’s 8th Congressional District.
Organization & Service
The 150th Indiana Infantry (One Year’s Service) was organized at Indianapolis, Indiana, in March 1865. The regiment mustered into Federal service on March 9, 1865, under the command of Colonel Marsh B. Taylor, Lieutenant Colonel Thomas C. Dalby, and Major James M. Watts. The original strength was 988 men, with an additional 94 recruits joining during its term, bringing the total to 1,082.
After mustering in, the regiment departed Indiana on March 13, 1865, for Harper’s Ferry, Virginia. From Harper’s Ferry, the unit marched to Charlestown, then to Winchester, and subsequently to Stephenson’s Depot. The regiment remained stationed at Stephenson’s Depot until June 27, 1865, when it moved to Jordan’s Springs. The 150th Indiana Infantry performed garrison and guard duties at these locations until it was mustered out of service on August 5, 1865.
