148th Indiana Infantry in the American Civil War

Overview

The 148th Indiana Infantry (One Year’s Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Indiana for Federal service during the final months of the Civil War. Raised in response to a call for one-year regiments in late 1864, the unit was mustered at Indianapolis in February 1865. The regiment served the Union, primarily in the Western Theater, and was chiefly engaged in guard and garrison duties in Tennessee during its term of service.

This regiment was composed mainly of recruits from Indiana’s 6th Congressional District. Its period of service coincided with the closing months of the conflict and the immediate postwar period.
