The 147th Indiana Infantry (One Year’s Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Indiana for Union service during the final months of the American Civil War. The regiment was mustered in at Indianapolis on March 13, 1865, in response to a late-war call for one-year regiments. It served in the Eastern Theater, primarily performing guard and garrison duties in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia and Maryland.
This regiment was composed of seven companies recruited from Indiana’s 5th Congressional district, two from the 11th district, and one company formed from detachments from Benton, Henry, and Fayette counties. The 147th Indiana Infantry was mustered out of service on August 4, 1865.
Organization & Service
