145th Indiana Infantry in the American Civil War

Overview

The 145th Indiana Infantry (One Year’s Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Indiana for Union service during the American Civil War. The regiment was raised in the 3rd Congressional District in response to a call for one-year regiments in late 1864. It was mustered into Federal service at Indianapolis in February 1865 and served primarily in the Western Theater, performing guard and garrison duties in Georgia until early 1866.

This regiment served the Union cause during the final months of the war and the early period of postwar occupation in the South.

Organization & Service

The 145th Indiana Infantry (One Year’s Service) was organized at Indianapolis, Indiana, in February 1865. The regiment was mustered in on February 16, 1865, under the command of Colonel Will A. Adams, Lieutenant Colonel John F. Douglas, and Major Vinson Williams. The original strength was 993 men, with an additional 30 recruits joining later, bringing the total to 1,023.

After mustering in, the regiment departed Indiana on February 18, 1865, proceeding to Nashville, Tennessee, and then to Chattanooga. By February 23, the unit arrived at Dalton, Georgia, where it was assigned to railroad guard duty. The regiment remained engaged in this capacity for several months, ensuring the security of vital transportation lines. Later, the 145th Indiana Infantry moved to Marietta, Georgia, where it was stationed until the fall of 1865. Subsequently, the regiment was ordered to Cuthbert, Georgia, where it continued on duty until it was mustered out of service on January 21, 1866.
