Overview
The 135th Indiana Infantry (One Hundred Days’ Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Indiana for Union service during the American Civil War. Mustered in at Indianapolis in May 1864, the regiment was composed of companies raised from Indiana’s 8th Congressional district. The 135th Indiana served as part of Indiana’s quota of one hundred days’ troops, primarily tasked with guard and garrison duties in Tennessee. The regiment served the Union cause in the Western Theater and was mustered out in August 1864.
Organization & Service
The 135th Indiana Infantry (One Hundred Days’ Service) was organized and mustered into Federal service at Indianapolis in May 1864, with an initial strength of approximately 930 men. Colonel William C. Wilson commanded the regiment, with Lieutenant Colonel John H. Gould and Major Benjamin M. Gregory as field officers. The regiment was part of Indiana’s contingent of one hundred days’ volunteers, which included regiments numbered from the 132nd to the 139th.
After mustering in, the 135th Indiana left the state promptly and moved to Tennessee. Upon arrival in Nashville, the regiment was assigned to guard duty along the Nashville & Chattanooga, Tennessee & Alabama, and Memphis & Charleston railroads. Their primary responsibility was to protect these vital transportation lines, ensuring the safe movement of supplies and communications for Union forces, particularly those under General Sherman. The regiment remained engaged in this duty throughout its service, continuing even beyond its original term of enlistment, until the latter part of August 1864, when it was mustered out.
