114th Indiana Infantry in the American Civil War

Overview

The 114th Indiana Infantry (Minute Men) was an infantry regiment organized for emergency service by the State of Indiana during the American Civil War. The regiment was formed in Johnson County on July 9, 1863, in response to the threat posed by Confederate cavalry under General John Hunt Morgan during his raid into Indiana. The 114th Indiana Infantry served briefly as part of the Union forces defending the state and was mustered out later that same month.

This unit was composed of six companies of minute men, totaling 383 rank and file, and was commanded by Colonel Samuel Lamberton. The regiment’s service was limited to the emergency occasioned by Morgan’s Raid and did not extend beyond Indiana state lines.

Organization & Service

The 114th Indiana Infantry (Minute Men) was organized at Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana, on July 9, 1863. Its formation was part of a rapid mobilization of Indiana citizens following news that Confederate cavalry under General John Hunt Morgan had crossed the Ohio River into Indiana on July 8, 1863. In response, Governor Oliver P. Morton called for volunteers to defend the state. Within two days, over 65,000 men offered their services, and regiments numbered 102nd through 114th, along with one battalion, were organized for short-term emergency service.

After organization, the 114th Indiana Infantry moved to Columbus, Indiana, and then to Vernon. As Morgan’s forces retreated toward Ohio, the regiment was ordered to Sunman’s Station. Following the end of the immediate threat, the regiment returned to Indianapolis, where it was mustered out of service on July 21, 1863. The regiment’s entire period of service lasted less than two weeks, and its duties were confined to defensive operations within Indiana.
