Overview
The 112th Indiana Infantry (Minute Men) was a Union infantry regiment organized for emergency service during the summer of 1863 in response to Confederate cavalry raids led by General John Hunt Morgan. Raised in Indiana, the regiment was part of a rapid mobilization of state forces to defend against Morgan’s incursion. The 112th served for a brief period in July 1863, primarily within Indiana, and did not leave the state during its term of service.
Organization & Service
The 112th Indiana Infantry (Minute Men) was organized at Indianapolis on July 10, 1863, following the urgent call for volunteers after Morgan’s cavalry crossed the Ohio River near Mauckport. The regiment comprised nine companies of minute men and one company from the Indiana Legion. Lawrence County provided six companies, Monroe and Washington counties each supplied one, and the remaining two companies were drawn from various southern Indiana counties. The regiment mustered a total of 703 officers and men.
Assigned to General Hughes’ brigade, the 112th Indiana Infantry moved from Mitchell to Seymour and then to North Vernon, where it played a role in defending the town against Morgan’s advancing forces. After holding North Vernon, the regiment proceeded to Sunman’s Station. The regiment’s service was brief, and it was mustered out at Indianapolis on July 17, 1863, after the immediate threat had passed.
