102nd Indiana Infantry in the American Civil War

Overview

The 102nd Indiana Infantry (Minute Men) was a short-term infantry regiment organized for emergency service during the American Civil War. Raised in Boone County, Indiana, the regiment was formed in response to the threat posed by Confederate cavalry under General John Hunt Morgan during his 1863 raid into Indiana. The unit was composed of Indiana Legion members and mustered into Union service on July 10, 1863, for state defense. It served exclusively within Indiana and was mustered out after the immediate threat had passed.

Organization & Service

The 102nd Indiana Infantry (Minute Men) was organized at Boone County, Indiana, on July 10, 1863, following a call for volunteers after news arrived that Morgan’s cavalry had crossed the Ohio River. The regiment, numbering 623 men, was quickly assembled from the Indiana Legion and placed under the command of Colonel Benjamin M. Gregory, Lieutenant Colonel Peter A. Huffman, and Major David W. Hamilton.

The regiment departed Indianapolis by rail on July 11, 1863, arriving at North Vernon the following morning. From there, it marched to Vernon, where Company K was mounted and dispatched in pursuit of Morgan’s forces. The regiment then moved to Dupont, proceeded to Osgood, and on July 14 reached Sunman’s Station. With the threat from Morgan’s raid subsiding, the 102nd Indiana Infantry returned to Indianapolis on July 17, 1863, and was mustered out of service shortly thereafter. The regiment’s service was limited to the emergency period of Morgan’s Raid and did not extend beyond Indiana’s borders.
