Overview
The 96th Indiana Infantry (Union) was an infantry regiment authorized under the call of July 1862, intended to be raised from the 6th Congressional District of Indiana. The regiment was to serve in the Western Theater for the Union Army during the American Civil War. Its rendezvous point was designated as Indianapolis, Indiana.
Notably, the regiment was never fully organized. Only three companies were recruited under this designation, and these companies were subsequently reassigned to another Indiana regiment.
Organization & Service
The 96th Indiana Infantry was authorized in July 1862, with recruitment focused in the 6th Congressional District and assembly planned at Indianapolis. However, recruitment efforts resulted in only three companies being raised. Due to insufficient numbers to form a full regiment, these companies were not mustered as the 96th Indiana Infantry. Instead, they were transferred and assigned to the 99th Indiana Infantry, which was being organized at South Bend, Indiana.
The 96th Indiana Infantry, as a distinct regimental organization, did not see independent service or participate in field operations as a separate unit.
