Overview
The 64th Indiana Regiment was an attempted Union regiment from Indiana during the American Civil War. Initially conceived as an artillery regiment, it was intended to be composed of twelve light batteries. The unit was organized in Indiana for Federal service, but its formation was ultimately not completed due to War Department policy.
This regiment was never fully mustered into service as a consolidated regiment. The War Department declined to accept consolidated artillery regiments, which prevented the completion of the 64th Indiana Regiment’s organization.
Organization & Service
The 64th Indiana Regiment began organizing in Indiana with the intention of forming a full artillery regiment consisting of twelve light batteries. Recruitment and initial organization took place in 1862. However, the War Department’s refusal to accept consolidated artillery regiments meant that the unit could not complete its organization as planned. As a result, the 64th Indiana Regiment was never mustered into Federal service as a regiment, and its batteries were not accepted as a single unit. Some men who had enlisted for this regiment may have been transferred to other Indiana artillery batteries or units.
No further service record exists for the 64th Indiana Regiment as a consolidated regiment, and it did not participate in any campaigns or battles as a unit.
