Unassigned Recruits
Some recruits and transferred men, particularly those remaining after the muster-out of other Indiana regiments, were assigned to the 51st Indiana Infantry in 1865. Records for these men are included when available.
Consolidations or Transfers
In May 1865, a number of recruits from the 79th Indiana Infantry were transferred to the 51st Indiana Infantry following the muster-out of the 79th. These transfers are noted in the appropriate company rosters when documented.
