Organized at Indianapolis in August and September 1861, it was mustered in for three years’ service on September 18, 1861. The regiment served primarily in the Western Theater and participated in several major campaigns and battles.

This unit is distinct from the 10th Indiana Infantry (Three Months’ Service).

Organization & Service

The 10th Indiana Infantry (Three Years’ Service) was reorganized at Indianapolis, Indiana, in August and September 1861, following the expiration of its three months’ term. The regiment was mustered in on September 18, 1861, and departed Indiana on September 22 for Louisville, Kentucky. It subsequently moved to Bardstown, New Haven, and Lebanon, Kentucky, as part of Union operations in the region.

The regiment saw its first significant action at the Battle of Mill Springs in January 1862, where it played a key role in repelling a Confederate charge. The 10th Indiana then joined Major General Don Carlos Buell’s army during the advance to the Tennessee River, arriving too late to participate in the Battle of Shiloh. The regiment was present at the Siege of Corinth and remained there until the Confederate evacuation. It then took part in the pursuit of General Braxton Bragg’s forces through Kentucky and fought at the Battle of Perryville in October 1862.

After Perryville, the regiment was stationed south of the Cumberland River and east of Nashville until the summer of 1863. It then joined the Army of the Cumberland’s advance to Chattanooga and participated in the Battle of Chickamauga, where Colonel William B. Carroll was killed. In January 1864, a portion of the regiment reenlisted as veterans at Chattanooga and subsequently joined General William T. Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign, engaging at Dallas, New Hope Church, and Kennesaw Mountain. On September 8, 1864, the veterans and recruits were transferred to the 58th Indiana Infantry, and the remaining members were mustered out on September 19, 1864.
