Overview
The 2nd Ohio Battalion Cavalry (Temporary Service) was a small cavalry unit organized in Ohio during the latter part of the Civil War. Composed of two companies, this battalion served the Union and was primarily tasked with guard duty within the state. Its brief period of service occurred in 1864, near the end of the national guard movement in Ohio.
The battalion’s companies were organized at separate times and performed their duties at the state arsenal, reflecting the need for local security as the war drew to a close. The unit’s service was limited in scope and duration, and it did not participate in field campaigns or battles outside Ohio.
Organization & Service
The 2nd Ohio Battalion Cavalry (Temporary Service) consisted of two companies, each organized for short-term duty in 1864. Company A was raised in Highland County and called into service in August 1864. Under the command of Captain Waddell, Company A was assigned to guard the Ohio state arsenal for a term of 60 days. Upon completion of its service, the company was paid by the United States government and relieved by Company C.
Company C, also part of the battalion, took over the same guard duties under Captain Amen. This company likewise served out its term of enlistment, performing guard duty at the arsenal, and was mustered out and paid by the federal government upon completion. The battalion’s service was entirely limited to guard duty within Ohio, and it did not see action in field operations or campaigns.
