Departmental Corps, Infantry in the American Civil War

Overview

The 1st Ohio Departmental Corps, Infantry was a short-term Union infantry unit organized in the summer of 1863 as part of the Department of the Monongahela. This department included counties in eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania, and parts of West Virginia, with headquarters at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Ohio contingent consisted of four companies, all recruited from Belmont County, Ohio. The unit served primarily in a defensive and local security capacity during a period of heightened concern for the region’s safety.

Organization & Service

In response to the formation of the Department of the Monongahela in early summer 1863, authority was granted to raise eight companies for a Departmental Corps, with Ohio’s quota set at four companies. All four Ohio companies were recruited in Belmont County during July 1863. The companies were organized as follows:

  • Captain Deens’ company: enrolled July 12 at Barnesville, mustered July 16 at Pittsburgh, Pa.
  • Captain Eaton’s company: enrolled July 15 at Barnesville, mustered August 15.
  • Captain Arrick’s company: enrolled July 15 at Hendrysburg, mustered August 19.
  • Captain Beard’s company: enrolled July 27, mustered August 28 at Wheeling, W. Va.

The companies were placed on active duty for a period not exceeding 60 days, performing local defense and security duties within the Department of the Monongahela. After this period, they were sent home to await further orders. No further call for their services was made, and the companies were formally mustered out on November 1, 1864.
