Overview
The 10th Ohio Independent Company Sharpshooters served as a specialized unit in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Organized at Cleveland, Ohio, in March 1864, the company was mustered into United States service on April 1, 1864. The company was part of the sharpshooter branch and operated primarily in the Eastern Theater. Initially, it was temporarily attached to the 60th Ohio Infantry, a three years’ regiment, before being assigned to active operations in Virginia.
The 10th Ohio Independent Company Sharpshooters participated in several significant campaigns and battles, including actions at North Anna River, Totopotomy, Bethesda Church, Cold Harbor, the Siege of Petersburg, and operations around Richmond. The company was eventually consolidated with the 60th Ohio Infantry in early 1865 and mustered out later that year.
Organization & Service
The 10th Ohio Independent Company Sharpshooters was organized at Cleveland, Ohio, and mustered into service on April 1, 1864. The company rendezvoused at Camp Taylor, where it was temporarily attached to the 60th Ohio Infantry, which at that time consisted of six companies. On April 24, 1864, the company departed Camp Taylor for Alexandria, Virginia, where it was assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division.
Throughout its service, the 10th Ohio Sharpshooters participated in several major engagements as part of the Overland Campaign and subsequent operations in Virginia. The company was actively involved at North Anna River, Totopotomy, Bethesda Church, Cold Harbor, and the Siege of Petersburg, as well as actions around Richmond. On February 24, 1865, the company was permanently transferred to the 60th Ohio Infantry. The men were mustered out of service on July 28, 1865, at Washington, D.C.
