198th Ohio Infantry in the American Civil War

Overview

The 198th Ohio Infantry (One Year Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Ohio for Federal service during the closing weeks of the American Civil War. Composed of eight companies, the regiment was formed at Camp Chase, Ohio, in April 1865. The unit was intended to serve for one year in the Union Army, but its service was cut short due to the end of the conflict.

This regiment was part of the Union forces and was mustered in just as the Confederacy was collapsing. Its brief existence reflects the rapid demobilization that followed the cessation of hostilities in the spring of 1865.

Organization & Service

The 198th Ohio Infantry (One Year Service) was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, from April 17 to April 27, 1865. The regiment was composed of eight companies, rather than the standard ten, as recruitment was underway when the Confederate surrender effectively ended the war. The regiment was mustered into service with the intention of serving for one year.

Before the regiment reached its full complement, the Confederacy collapsed in April 1865. In accordance with orders from the War Department, the 198th Ohio Infantry was mustered out of service on May 8, 1865. The regiment did not see active field service or participate in any campaigns or battles due to the timing of its organization and the rapid conclusion of the war.
