Organization & Service
The 194th Ohio Infantry was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, in March 1865. Upon completion of organization and muster, the regiment was ordered to Charlestown, West Virginia, where it was assigned to Major General Egan’s division. This division included one brigade of Eastern troops and one brigade of Western troops, with the 194th Ohio forming part of the latter.
Shortly after the regiment’s arrival, the surrender of General Robert E. Lee’s army at Appomattox Court House led to the dissolution of Egan’s division and its brigades. The 194th Ohio Infantry was subsequently ordered to Washington, D.C., where it performed garrison duty for the remainder of its service. The regiment remained stationed in Washington until October 24, 1865, when it was mustered out in accordance with orders from the War Department.
