Overview
The 192nd Ohio Infantry (One Year Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Ohio for Union service during the final months of the American Civil War. Mustered at Camp Chase on March 9, 1865, the regiment was intended for one year’s service. It served in the Eastern Theater, primarily in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The regiment’s service was characterized by garrison and guard duties rather than active combat, as major hostilities were concluding during its period of service.
Organization & Service
The 192nd Ohio Infantry was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, and mustered into Federal service on March 9, 1865, under the command of Colonel Francis W. Butterfield. Shortly after organization, the regiment proceeded to Halltown, Virginia, near Harper’s Ferry, where it joined a provisional division. The regiment marched through Charlestown and soon after was assigned to relieve another unit picketing the Shenandoah River for several miles above and below Kabletown.
Following this duty, the regiment’s line along the river was abandoned, and the unit moved to Winchester, Virginia, via Berryville. The 192nd Ohio was stationed for a period at Stephenson’s Depot and subsequently near Jordan Springs. Later, it was ordered to Rude’s Hill, where the main body encamped, while two companies were detached to Harrisonburg. The regiment remained on these duties until it was ordered to be mustered out. The 192nd Ohio Infantry was mustered out of service on September 1, 1865, in accordance with orders from the War Department.
