Overview
The 189th Ohio Infantry (One Year Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Ohio for service in the Union Army during the final months of the American Civil War. The regiment was mustered in at multiple locations across the state, including Toledo, Camp Chase, Cincinnati, Marietta, Hillsboro, and Dayton, between January 12 and March 6, 1865. It served in the Western Theater and was primarily assigned to garrison and post duty in Tennessee during its term of service.
Organization & Service
The 189th Ohio Infantry (One Year Service) was organized at various Ohio locations from January 12 to March 6, 1865. Upon completion of organization, the regiment was ordered on March 4, 1865, to report to Major General George H. Thomas at Nashville, Tennessee. Shortly after arrival, the regiment was sent to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where it performed garrison duty for approximately two months. In May 1865, the regiment was transferred to Tullahoma, Tennessee, where it continued similar duties for another two months. In July 1865, the regiment was ordered back to Nashville. The 189th Ohio Infantry was mustered out of service at Nashville on September 28, 1865.
