Overview
The 188th Ohio Infantry (One Year Service) was an infantry regiment organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, from March 2 to March 4, 1865, for service in the Union Army during the final months of the American Civil War. The regiment served in the Western Theater and was primarily assigned to garrison and post duty in Tennessee. Its service coincided with the closing period of the war and the beginning of postwar occupation duties.
Organization & Service
The 188th Ohio Infantry (One Year Service) was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, and mustered into service between March 2 and March 4, 1865. Colonel Jacob E. Taylor commanded the regiment, with Lieutenant Colonel John C. Frankeberger and Major Jacob A. Leonard as principal field officers. Upon completion of organization, the regiment was ordered to report to Major General George H. Thomas at Nashville, Tennessee, arriving there on March 9, 1865.
The regiment was assigned to duty under Brigadier General Horatio P. Van Cleve and was ordered to Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The 188th Ohio Infantry remained at Murfreesboro for approximately two months, performing garrison and post duties. In May 1865, the regiment was ordered to Tullahoma, Tennessee, where it continued similar duties for another two months. In July 1865, the regiment was ordered back to Nashville, where it remained until it was mustered out of service on September 21, 1865, in accordance with orders from the War Department.
