Overview

The 187th Ohio Infantry (One Year Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Ohio for service in the Union Army during the final months of the American Civil War. Mustered at Camp Chase on March 2, 1865, the regiment was composed of volunteers enlisted for a one-year term. The unit primarily served in the Western Theater, performing garrison and provost duties in Georgia until early 1866.

Organization & Service

The 187th Ohio Infantry was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, and mustered into Federal service on March 2, 1865, under the command of Colonel Andrew R. Z. Dawson. The regiment departed Ohio for Nashville, Tennessee, on March 3, 1865. Upon arrival in Nashville, it received orders to proceed to Dalton, Georgia. From Dalton, the regiment marched to Kingston, Georgia, before returning to Dalton, where it remained in camp for approximately 30 days while railroad repairs were underway.

After the railroad was restored, the regiment was transported by rail to Macon, Georgia. The 187th Ohio Infantry was assigned to provost (military police) duty in Macon, where it remained until January 20, 1866. On that date, the regiment was mustered out of service in accordance with orders from the War Department.
