Overview
The 179th Ohio Infantry (One Year Service) was an infantry regiment from Ohio that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Organized at Camp Chase in September 1864, the regiment was mustered in for one year of service. The unit was primarily assigned to garrison and post duty in Nashville, Tennessee, and participated in the defense of that city during the Battle of Nashville. Organization & Service
The 179th Ohio Infantry was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, in September 1864. The regiment was mustered into Federal service for one year. Shortly after organization, the regiment moved to Nashville, Tennessee, arriving on October 8, 1864. Upon arrival, the 179th was assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 4th Division, 20th Army Corps. The regiment performed garrison and post duties at Nashville, including participation in the defense of the city during the Battle of Nashville in December 1864.
Following the battle, the 179th Ohio Infantry continued to serve on post duty in Nashville until June 17, 1865. On that date, the regiment was mustered out of service in accordance with orders from the War Department.
