Organization & Service

The 176th Ohio Infantry was organized at various Ohio towns and mustered into service from August 10 to September 21, 1864. Upon completion of its organization, the regiment was ordered to Nashville, Tennessee. There, it was assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 4th Division, 20th Army Corps. The regiment was soon detailed for provost guard duty in Nashville, a role it maintained for much of its service.

During the Battle of Nashville in December 1864, the regiment was stationed within the defensive works of the city. Only a few companies, under the command of Major William F. Cummings, were actively engaged during the battle. The remainder of the regiment continued its provost duties. The 176th Ohio Infantry remained in Nashville until it was mustered out on June 14, 1865, in accordance with orders from the War Department.
