Overview
The 175th Ohio Infantry (One Year Service) was an infantry regiment organized at Camp Dennison, Ohio, in October 1864 for service in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment served primarily in the Western Theater, performing garrison and guard duties, and participated in the Franklin-Nashville Campaign. It was mustered in for a one-year term and served until June 1865.
Organization & Service
The 175th Ohio Infantry was organized at Camp Dennison, near Cincinnati, Ohio, in October 1864. Upon completion of its organization, the regiment was ordered to Columbia, Tennessee. There, it was assigned to post and garrison duty in the town and was responsible for guarding the Tennessee & Alabama Railroad, a vital supply line for Union forces in the region.
During the advance of Confederate General John Bell Hood in late 1864, one of the regiment’s outposts south of Columbia was captured. The remainder of the regiment withdrew to Franklin, Tennessee, where it participated in the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864. Following this engagement, the regiment fell back to Nashville and took position in Fort Negley, remaining there during the Battle of Nashville. After the Confederate retreat, the 175th Ohio was ordered back to Columbia on December 25, 1864, where it resumed garrison duties and continued to guard railroad bridges. The regiment was mustered out of service on June 27, 1865, in accordance with orders from the War Department.
