Organization & Service
The 167th Ohio Infantry (One Hundred Days’ Service) was organized at Hamilton, Ohio, in mid-May 1864. Upon completion of its organization and muster, the regiment received orders to proceed to Charleston, West Virginia, arriving there on May 21, 1864. The regiment reported to Colonel Ewart, who was commanding the post at Charleston.
Shortly after arrival, the regiment was divided: six companies were sent to Camp Piatt, and four companies were sent to Gauley Bridge. These detachments relieved the 2nd, 3rd, and 7th West Virginia Cavalry at their respective posts. The primary duty of the 167th Ohio Infantry during its service was to guard government stores and to accompany supply trains to and from the main Federal forces operating in that region of West Virginia. The regiment did not participate in major field engagements and was primarily assigned to garrison and guard duties. The 167th Ohio Infantry was mustered out of service on September 8, 1864.
