Overview
The 164th Ohio Infantry (One Hundred Days’ Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Ohio for Union service during the American Civil War. Mustered at Camp Cleveland on May 11, 1864, the regiment was composed primarily of men from the 49th Regiment, Ohio National Guard (Seneca County) and the 54th Battalion (Summit County). The unit served for a term of 100 days, operating chiefly in the defenses of Washington, D.C.
The 164th Ohio Infantry was part of the broader mobilization of Ohio National Guard units in the spring of 1864, intended to provide short-term garrison duty and free veteran troops for active campaigning in the Eastern Theater.
Organization & Service
The regiment was officially organized at Camp Cleveland, Ohio, on May 11, 1864, under the command of Colonel John C. Lee. The unit consisted of National Guard companies drawn from Seneca and Summit counties. After organization, the regiment departed Cleveland on May 14, traveling through Dunkirk, Elmira, Harrisburg, and Baltimore, and arrived in Washington, D.C., on May 17, 1864.
Upon arrival, the 164th Ohio Infantry was assigned to the defenses south of the Potomac River. The regiment was stationed at several forts, including Fort Smith, Fort Strong, Fort Bennett, and Fort Haggarty, as well as other nearby fortifications. Its primary duties involved garrisoning these positions, maintaining readiness, and supporting the defense of the capital during the height of the 1864 campaign season.
